February 12, 2025 — As an offensive by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) escalates in North Darfur, Sudan, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is extremely worried about the safety of its staff and the hundreds of thousands of people already living under shelling and starvation in Zamzam, the country's largest displacement camp.
The RSF has been laying siege to the city of El Fasher and Zamzam camp for months. An RSF offensive reached Zamzam yesterday, leading to fighting between the RSF and the Joint Forces (a coalition of armed groups in Darfur that are allied with the Sudanese Armed Forces) within the camp today, endangering many displaced people.
Yesterday, the MSF field hospital in Zamzam camp received 23 patients, and seven additional people were dead on arrival. Today the MSF hospital in Zamzam received 17 patients.
MSF's field hospital is not equipped to deal with traumatic injuries requiring surgery, and it is now impossible to send critical patients to Saudi Hospital in El Fasher because of intense clashes on the road.
MSF calls on all warring parties to spare civilians and allow them to escape the camp, and to protect medical staff and health facilities.
